Autocratic Leadership by JASS Dhararathne

Autocratic leadership is also known as authoritarian leadership. It is a method of controlling the people in an organisation, by a limited number of leaders according to their point of view. Most of the time, they never engage with their followers ideas. Autocratic leaders use their power to control the followers.

There are some good qualities and bad qualities in autocratic leadership, as well as in other leadership styles. The leaders use this autocratic style, are like bossy or dictators. This module can be useful for some specific areas. It depends on the situation.


Most probably, autocratic leadership style in negative. But for some situations, autocratic leadership is being useful. Such like,in the places, where decisions could be  make instantly is better to use autocratic leadership style. In Some situations, it is essential to take quick and hard decisions, and most proffered leadership style is autocratic style.

Autocratic leadership style is suitable for some situations such like, military conflicts. It helps to leaders to make decisions and implement them without any rejection and followers never comes against it. It will directly help the group members to become more skilled and performed in the organization and it will decently effect on success of the institute.

We are interested to be leaders. But when we gets the opportunity to be a leader, we will come in to a position to choose a leadership style. Autocratic, democratic, delegate , or combination. If you choose autocratic style, you should have these characteristics, 

 You have to take all important decisions.

You may not take ideas from the subordinates in your organisation   

You prefer all the working methods, tools and processes in your own. 

You prefer to work in a well-planned working environment. 

You discourage creativity and out-of-the-box thinking process.

You define the work path and influence others to follow you. 

You make the team to achieve the institutional goal as well as your target. 

You control the team and they follows you. 

As an autocratic leader, you can lead your team to a goal winning situation by directing them and can come in to beneficial turning only if you don’t confuse the subordinates
